Becoming the person and people we are designed to be does not happen simply by chance or by trying but by training in the truths and promises of God in vital union with Jesus and through the person and power of the Holy Spirit.
Paul says in 1 Timothy 4,
[T]rain yourself in godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way,
as it holds promise for the present life and also for the lfie to come.
Trying is not training. Trying gives up. Training perseveres. Trying values comfort. Training values the goal. Trying is haphazard. Training is focused. Trying requires minimal effort. Training requires maximal effort.
Training in discipleship seeks to engage life by faithfully being coherent and credible witness of Jesus both verbally through gospel proclamation and visibly through kingdom demonstration. God's Good News story is defined and expressed most clearly in the person of Jesus. Jesus is the image of God par excellence and who grows us into his likeness by grace and through faith in him. The Holy Spirit authors this transformation as new creations in Jesus in order to live well in the Kingdom of God here on eath by living lives of love and justice.
